So much more than Sacre Coeur…….
蒙马特区的点评
点评：If you have several days in Paris, I’d recommend spending half a day in Montmartre. If you don’t have much time, you can just visit the Sacre Coeur Basilica.
The basilica sits at highest point in Paris, which means that you have magnificent views back down over the city. We walked up the steep hill to get there but you can also catch a funicular train up as well (it’s a quick 2 minute ride).
The basilica itself is very striking. It’s a beautiful, gleaming white Taj-Mahal-like building. It’s most impressive from the outside but entry is free and the queue to get in moves quite quickly so it’s worth joining the line.
However Montmartre is so much more than just Sacre Coeur. It's the sort of place where you can spend some time just wandering the steep but picturesque, ivy-clad streets. One street, Rue de l’Abreuvoir is often said to be the prettiest street in Paris. On Rue Lepic we walked past the only two windmills left in Paris. Further along the same street, we passed the house where Vincent Van Gogh lived for a few years with his brother (#58 with the blue doors).
Montmartre is synonymous with the names of famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Utrillo, Monet and Renoir. As struggling young artists, they all lived here at one time or another. Montmartre fell just outside Paris’ city limits so it escaped the city’s taxes and developed a bohemian, artistic reputation. Cheap rent and a growing artistic community attracted many struggling artists.
We were keen to to take in some of this history so we followed a self-guided walk - the Montmartre Artists Walking Trail, which we found online at a site called ‘Montmartre Footsteps(dot)com’. It took us past all of the main sites linked to these artists including the Place de Tertre, the Maison Rouge and Le Batieau-Lavoir.
As we wandered through Montmartre, other points of interest included the Church of St Pierre, Moulin Rouge, Square Louise Michel, Place des Abbesses, and the Wall of Love.
