点评:Over the years, I've been on plenty of guided tours where the guide dutifully walks you around pointing out architectural features in a building you're doing your best to find interesting. But our guide at Lavenham Guildhall - Tom - is something else entirely.
The building is a very interesting medieval guildhall in a very pretty and unusual Suffolk village. But, in Tom's hands, it became a lens through which he explored the derivation of words, the paranoid obsession with witchcraft, the social politics of 15th-century life, the texture of how ordinary people actually lived. He used the physical space not as the subject of the tour but as evidence - a series of clues he was brilliantly skilled at showing us.
He was entertaining without being showy, and genuinely clever in the way he connected what was in front of us to a much wider world. The whole thing felt like a conversation with someone who finds everything interesting and has a gift for making you feel the same way. (And he clearly knows his history).
If you're visiting the guildhall, do whatever you can to get Tom as your guide - and ask him lots of questions. He transformed what might have been a polite hour into something we're still thinking about.
