点评:Not a good experiance. Having just spent the morning travelling by train across Essex London and Kent I found my way to the steep footpath up to the castle. This starts from Maison Dieu road and according to a local I asked is the quickest way. It was a fairly straight path but was very steep and strewn with leaves (its autumn) and is about half a mile. I would suggest that this should only be attempted by fit and sprightly people. The path terminates behind a brick wall and crash barrier near the pedestrian entrance to the castle. there are no helpfull signs or pedestraian crossings to help you negotiate the T junction onto which you emerge. See my photo of the junction. I negotiated the junction and strolled up the pedestrian entrance road to be met by a nice lady who informed me that the castle was closed because of the wind. I was staggered, what possible effect could the wind have to the entire site that means it has to close? I later found out from the town museum that it can get extremely blowey at the top of the castle and it is difficult to stand. Excuse me for stating the obvious but if this is so why not just close the roof, why do you need to close the entire site???? I noticed later that the website now stated that the castle was closed and I was promptly refunded. However during the booking process there is no warning that the castle will close if it gets a bit windy. Perhaps the castle closes if it rains and there is a danger that visitors might get wet? Forgive the flippancy but the castle need to make this clear on their website.
So before you book I advise checking the weather forecast for winds above 15mph and possible heavy rain and before you set off check the website to make sure the site is still open. Though if you have to set out early like me you may not find this out.
There is an electric bus from the town (route 81 I think) so next time I try and visit the castle I will take that.
