点评:Burghley House and it’s grounds is a truly wonderful place and visiting it is something I never get tired of as I live locally, and j always take friends and family there when they visit me. However, recently on two occasions this year I have been very disappointed with the clock-watching manner of the staff.
When visiting with American relatives who were knocked out by the house, there was a sense of our rushing round the house in time to see something of the gardens. We
went into the gardens about 4 15 having been told at the entrance that they would close at 5 and we had made good note of that. At 4 45 a very stressed looking lady who was the staff at the entrance came charging round to find us, saying breathlessly “we are closing at 5.” Yes, we know, we said. As 4 45 is not 5 p m and we were within 5 mins max to the exit. My American niece and nephew were extremely puzzled at this panic and strange attitude to paying customers. Why do they close so early in summer anyway, fhey asked me, when the weather is so warm and sunny and late afternoon and early evening are great times to stroll around the gardens when it’s sometimes too hot earlier in the day.. Search me, I said. It makes no sense.
A Few weeks later I took my 8 year old granddaughter ( July 2026) to visit the inside of the house. We entered at 3 30 and this seemed fine as closing was at 5 p m and I thought an hour and a half was enough for her. But at 4 15 one of the guides said to me - we are closing now … what!? But I thought it was 5 pm, I replied . Oh Yes but we have to lock up at 4 30, was the reply. I am sorry but when you tell visitors closing is 5 p m then that is what it should be and if the house is locked at 4 30 then it isn’t open til 5 pm!! Otherwise it should say closing is at 4. 30. Then as we went through each remaining room the guides were locking doors behind us and there was a distinct sense of our being in the way and being pushed out. The final room was the magnificent Great Hall which we hardly had time to see and the guide wasn’t interested in speaking to us as shock, horror, it was 4.26 pm! There was still time for a drink at the Orangery which didn’t close til 5 p m but when we got in there at 4 30 the staff were covering all the cakes with cling film and there wasn’t a very warm welcome! We forgot the cake and took our cold drinks into the garden as it was a hot sunny day. At 4.45 a member of staff csme over to us and said - Not to rush you, but we close at 5 pm. I felt like screaming ! “But of course rushing us is exactly what you are doing “ because the staff want to be out of the door at 5 pm. If customers are out of the door at 5 pm then I am sorry but it is at that point that the staff need to clear up and cover the cakes with cling film! On both these visits to this beautiful hiuse I felt that the staff were clock watching and having a panic about not getting out of the building the minute it was 5 p m and consequently the visits were spoilt. This is not how it should be and perhaps the staff need better training about how to behave to visitors and clarity about what their working hours mean.
On a related point, Burghley needs fo consider later opening hours for the gardens in summer- especially considering global warming and hotter summers - and I am sure it would not be difficult to find staff to manage for example a 7 p m garden closure. The estate itself is open until 8 pm in summer, so this would make sense.
Burghley did not make me feel valued and did not honour its contract with me that my ticket was for 5 p m exit - despite the considerable cost of our tickets on these two occasions. Not good enough.
