点评:Nearest tube station: Russell Square on the Piccadilly line - about a 9 minute walk.
Location: a very quiet residential street.
On arriving go through the red door, turn left to pay the entrance fee (and receive a map)
Coffee shop: Once paid, I wanted a coffee so went through to the cafe at the back. I would give this 3 out of 5 because although the coffee was excellent, the only food served was sweet stuff e.g. scones/cakes/pastries. It would be good to have a few plain bagels with cheese or something for those of us wanting a lunch stop. It was a bit overcrowded with someone sharing my table as they had run out of seats so maybe have a gazebo or something as an overflow area into the garden (or get there early)
Toilets: there were toilets on each floor and these were very nice.
Other reviewers will have covered the exhibition better than me, but I learnt that Dickens tried to have his wife Catherine, committed to an asylum because he wanted to date an 18 year old, so it's a bit difficult to like the man after that.
I was just about to leave and remembered that there was a kitchen and asked the guide Peter, who said "it's not busy so why don't I show you around downstairs" so thank you Peter as it went from a a OK museum tour to a completely elevated museum tour.
Peter let me in on such nuggets as they used to keep hedgehogs by the fire to eat the bugs in the kitchens and the Dickens had their own water supply.
I left having thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
