点评:Tudor Fortress (1540s)
The defining moment in St Mawes' history came between 1540 and 1542, when King Henry VIII ordered the construction of St Mawes Castle.Facing potential invasion threats from Catholic alliance forces in France and Spain, Henry built a chain of coastal device forts. St Mawes Castle was designed as a cloverleaf-shaped artillery fortress to work to alongside Pendennis Castle across the estuary, creating a deadly crossfire to protect the deep-water harbour of Carrick Roads.Decorated with Tudor heraldry, gargoyles, and Latin inscriptions praising the King, St Mawes is considered one of the most complete and ornate surviving Henrician artillery forts in England.
Civil War & Political History
During the English Civil War, the castle was held by Royalist forces loyal to Charles I. However, in 1646, when Parliamentary troops under Sir Thomas Fairfax attacked by land from the rear—where the castle had little natural defense—the garrison surrendered without a prolonged siege. From 1562 until the Reform Act of 1832, St Mawes served as a "rotten borough," returning two Members of Parliament despite having a tiny local voting population.
Having spent a day walking around the town, we concluded it was well worth a visit. The car parking is about the same cost as anywhere these days, and there were plenty of spaces left but this was October. A good supply of art galleries and other types of outlets such as cafes etc. We did not go to Falmouth but the ferry looked like it could be fun.
