Horse riding on a volcanic oasis - good option for a longer stay

点评：The actual horse ride was lovely. We had good views and learned about the levadas and the forest. Be prepared for island time and finding your way to the facility. Map directions to the facility were pretty good, but it is a bit hard to find or really tell which fence/gate belongs to the Eq Village. From the dirt road, you cannot see horses in the barn being prepped, so you need to have a bit of faith and realize that the very bumpy road just past them is the national forest. Once you find it, it seems obvious.
We were asked to arrive 15 minutes early, but our ride started about 45 min late. We were on time and the communication came too late. We waited and were able to get fitted and into the saddles.
The tour leader was able to share equipment (helmets and a spare jacket) and some perspective on our horses’ personalities. They were beautiful animals (in spirit if not all in form) and were easily ridden as with most trail horses. They know where to go and weren’t terribly interested in being commanded.
There were a few moments of excitement needing to lean to avoid trees that had fallen across the trail and cut back. The 1-1.5 hr ride is mostly gently sloping. My horse stepped into a levada once while we were navigating a fallen tree and was able to recover with grace. I’m amazed at these animals.
We had a fairly inexperienced bunch and the shorter ride was the right choice for us. The horses are mostly smaller, so there is a weight limit - check with the staff. Over about 225 lbs need not bother as of our visit, for the health of the horses given their size and safety factors. Understandable.
I can recommend the ride and hope travelers continue to support this place.
Slight reduction in rating for the communication hiccup, lack of sign, and bit of monotone experience. They are a respectable organization and the experience was as expected. This is a good add to a trip to the island :)
