点评:The Arc de Triomphe in Paris was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 to honor those who fought and died for France. Construction began on Napoleon’s birthday August 15, 1806, and was completed in 1836. Napoleon never lived to see it completed as he died in exile in 182l A Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in honor of the fighters of World War I, was installed in1920. The tomb is located between the two pillars. The flame is rekindled every day at 6:30 pm. It sits at the busiest traffic roundabout in Paris and has 12 avenues branching from its center. During our bus tour of Paris, we drove around the Arc. It would have been nice to get off the bus and walk around it. Nevertheless, we were able to enjoy the beauty of the 164 feet and 148 feet wide symbol of Paris. We could see the four large limestone relief sculptures at the base of each pillar and were told that they depict important momentous moments in French history. The Arc is not just a tribute to soldiers but also commemorates France’s military victories. Today, besides being a symbol of remembrance, it is a place where major commemorations are made including November 11 (Veterans Day) and July 14 (Bastille Day). If you so desire, it is possible to climb to the top by walking up a spiral staircase of about 240 steps inside one of the pillars. Tickets are required to go inside the arc.
