I did a single day diving with Merlin at Kamala. Originally, I chose the shop because of its location, but actually, this didn’t matter because all the dive boats depart from Chalong Pier. All the divers travel on a larger boat to the site with DM, then dive separately around specific sites with DM.
Merlin guarantees a maximum of 4 divers per DM, but on my trip, it was just me and DM - who was excellent; safety-conscious, attentive to my experience, and an expert. Additionally, he had a camera and shared the images he took on the way back, which was a great bonus.
Robert at the dive shop was helpful, transparent, and supplied all my dive equipment and answered questions about the dive sites.
Diving at Racha Yai and Racha Noi was beautiful: clear water with some natural but mostly constructed reefs of cubes. You can read about this on the Padi website.
Whole day: 3 dives, hotel pick-up and return, boat, equipment, food, and drink was about $150 US, excluding DM tip.
There are loads of dive shops to choose from. I enjoyed Merlin because they were transparent in experience and pricing, equipment was maintained and good, and they made the whole experience easy. I recommend them.
