点评:We visited the National Trust Levant Tin Mine, it's an historic, clifftop mining complex located on the rugged "Tin Coast" of West Cornwall, near Pendeen and St Just. Established in 1820 and operating until 1930, it is famous for its extensive undersea tunnels that stretched over a mile out under the Atlantic Ocean bed.
We booked our tour online before our visit via the National Trust website - free to National Trust members. To access the internal mine buildings and see the beam engine in steam, you must pre-book a tour. The surrounding clifftop ruins and coast paths are free and open to explore year-round.
On the tour our guide took us down the The Man Engine Tunnel to explore the infamous "man engine" - a mechanism of moving wooden rods used to carry miners up and down the 600-metre deep shafts.
Our guide told us about the tragic mining disaster in October 1919, when a major mechanical failure of the man engine caused a collapse, taking the lives of 31 miners.
We were fortunate to have a guide who was a miner in the last working Cornish Tin Mine. He spoke from experience, recounting stories of real-life mining, bringing mining to life.
We were able to see the restored 1840s beam engine running on steam, it’s the world's oldest surviving Cornish beam winding engine still working on steam in its original engine house. An absolute marvel!
Levant has no on-site café or shops, and public toilets are restricted exclusively to visitors on pre-booked tours.
