A Bit of a Letdown – Know Before You Go

点评：I had high hopes for our visit, but honestly, it was a bit disappointing. If you haven't been in a while, the biggest shock is that the iconic "big dinosaur" (Dippy the Diplodocus) is no longer in the main Hintze Hall. He’s been replaced by a blue whale skeleton named Hope. While the whale is impressive in its own right, the hall definitely lacks that classic Jurassic feel it used to have.
Another gripe is the sheer number of replicas. For a museum of this stature, it felt like many of the standout skeletons were casts rather than original fossils, which takes away from the "wow" factor when you realize you're looking at plaster or resin instead of millions of years of history.
Top Tips for Your Visit:
- Pre-book everything: I cannot stress this enough. Even though general admission is free, you must pre-book a timed entry slot online. If you just turn up, you’ll likely be waiting in a massive line or potentially turned away during peak times.
- Entrance Hack: Be aware that there are multiple ways in. The main entrance on Cromwell Road almost always has a massive, winding queue. However, if you head around to the Exhibition Road entrance, it’s often much quieter—sometimes with no queue at all—even when the main front is packed.
- Manage Expectations: It's still a beautiful building (the architecture itself is a 5-star sight), but if you’re coming purely for authentic dinosaur bones, you might leave feeling a little underwhelmed.
It’s a great free day out for the kids, but for the serious history buff, it feels a bit more like a "best of" gallery than a deep dive into genuine artifacts.
