点评:Pulteney Bridge, with its arches and golden Bath stone, is one of Bath’s very pretty landmarks.
We had a good view of it from Grand Parade. From this elevated position, we could look down over the tree-lined river, the weir and the tiny triangular-shaped Pulteney Island as well. This is a very popular and scenic lookout point and it was busy with people taking photos and enjoying the view.
The bridge was built in the late 1700s as part of a grand scheme by William Pulteney to create a new Georgian town, called ‘Bathwick’.
Bath was in a building boom, the wealthy and fashionable were flocking to the city and its spas, and the potential for making money seemed obvious. However access was a problem.
The only access to Bathwick was by ferry so first Pulteney needed to connect it to the city. He sought out Robert Adam, a renowned Georgian architect, to design a beautiful bridge, worthy of his new estate. Adam had visited both Florence and Venice and he drew upon both the Ponte Vecchio and Ponte di Rialto in his design, including shops along both sides of the bridge.
Wars and financial problems intervened to disrupt the building of Bathwick itself but the bridge went ahead.
You can walk across Pulteney Bridge but because it has shops on both sides, it hardly feels like a bridge at all and is more like walking down a regular street.
