点评:The most expensive disappointment of the year so far.
We enjoy historical locations that not only offer specific insight into past lives in that place, but also offer plenty of the broader context. No 1 Royal Crescent offered none of that.
Visitors are presented with photos of a pretend family, we heard some kind of radio play going on in the background that was supposed be this fictitious family in conversation. None of the period items in the house were part of the story of the house.
My 5 year old and I felt tricked out of our entrance fee. He was bored within minutes when all there was for him to do was a 'spot the object' task in each room.
It felt as if we were not invited to ask questions at all. Which is just as well, because there were no room guides, just sensors and CCTV.
The constant presence of photographs, film and audio was possibly to create an immersive experience. In practice, it was intrusive to the historical imagination.
Compared to the Roman Baths, which we had visited in the morning, this felt shallow and insulting to our interest in history.
We prefer to escape the 21st century when visiting a 'heritage' location.
