点评:I visited the British Museum's Korea exhibition with my sister and a few friends last week and we all enjoyed it, although we found it to be a bit small. Consisting mainly of objects on loan from the collection of the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-Hee, which now belongs to the National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, the exhibition includes various artistic masterpieces such as ancient gold jewellery, Buddhist icons, and celadon-glazed stoneware. There are also ink paintings and contemporary works that examine Korea's turbulent history, though it does feel like the exhibition misses out on the recent explosion in popularity of Korean culture, which was covered very well by the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum's Hallyu! The Korean Wave exhibition a few years ago. Nevertheless, the exhibition is worth visiting if you're keen to learn more about Korean culture, though don't expect too much as each period of Korean history is covered by a small display.
Standard tickets start from £18 though there's a 50% discount for National Art Pass holders and Museum Association members can get free tickets on the day subject to availability, as well as book free tickets on Tuesdays. Give yourself around an hour to see the exhibition and, if you have time, take the chance to explore the museum's remarkable permanent collection or one of the free temporary displays such as Multiplied wonders: Italian Renaissance woodcuts.
If I had to give the exhibition a rating, I would probably give it four starts since it's too small for my liking but it's well-curated, though I did find some of the modern art pieces a bit hit and miss. However, if you take the opportunity to also visit the museum's permanent Korea gallery, you would probably find it more worth your while, which is why I've given five stars on this review.
