点评:What an unexpected treat this was! We were planning a visit to the area and noticed Rocky Mount on a map, so decided to include it. Very glad we did. I knew that nearby Jonesborough is the oldest city in the state, but I did not know how the first white settlers came to make their homes in this part of Tennessee (then North Carolina). Learned a lot about the original families, especially the Cobb family whose home was at Rocky Mount. Their original 2-story log home was restored in the 1960s, and costumed living history interpreters who portray various family members really bring it all to life. The older lady who did the kitchen tour/talk (who said she's been doing reenactments for 22 years) was especially informative and entertaining. From her, we learned, for example, that whether settlers were from Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany, France, or wherever, the local Cherokee called them all English; that children as young as 2 were expected to help in the kitchen; that boys at age 9 were sent off to apprentice for a trade; and that many indentured servants (who signed agreements to work 5-7 years in exchange for their passage from Europe) were actually kept working for decades. (Although the Cobb family was known to be fair and treated their servants fairly.)
The site includes several log outbuildings (moved from other parts of the county), vegetable and herb gardens, and a quite extensive museum that has good information and displays on how the early families lived, and on early medicine, tools, musical instruments, and household items. We also learned a lot about the short-lived state of Franklin - how locals attempted to form the first new state west of the Appalachians and away from the original 13 colonies, whose leaders really had little interest at that time in governing the wilderness. Rocky Mount State Historic Site has numerous special events throughout the year that would add to the experience.
