Trekking across a grassland in Inner Mongolia is a sensory and emotional experience that feels very different from hiking in forests or mountains. The immense openness where the horizon stretches endlessly, giving a feeling of freedom and vastness, almost meditative. You feel echoes of Mongolian horsemen and herders, as if stepping into their world. Trekking the grassland is less about conquering terrain and more about immersing yourself in openness, silence, and cultural memory.
Huitengxile Grassland (辉腾锡勒草原) is an alpine meadow plateau — vast, high‑altitude pastures (at 2100 m elevation) filled with wildflowers, volcanic lakes, and endless skies. It’s one of Inner Mongolia’s most beautiful summer destinations, offering both natural scenery and cultural immersion.
We began our trekking from from the Huanghuagou Scenic Area to Shengmu Spring (圣母泉), boarding the shuttle bus, the mini-train, the horse carriage and the cable car along the way to transport us between stations. It is a gentle but rewarding alpine walk, combining natural scenery with cultural legend. The wind is strong and cooling and if you did not wear your hat properly, it would fly off when on the transport. We went for a short horse riding, wear the Mongolian costume for photography, listened to a demonstration on making milk tea in a turf and practised archery in a range.
The sunset at the grassland is beautiful. Our laughter broke the silence in the vast grasslands.
