点评:We decided to stop at Matthiessen State Park on our way home from southern Illinois. It is located a few miles south of the more “famous” Starved Rock. The park was named after Frederick Matthiessen who originally owned 176 acres. Donated by his heirs after his death in 1918, it has grown to 1938 acres. The park is centered on a stream that flows from the Matthiessen Lake to the Vermilion River. Many paths we took were over streams with random stones for crossing. Erosion of the canyons by the stream has produced incredible rock formations in addition to waterfalls. The five miles of trails vary in difficulty (there is one staircase that had 181 steps) so plan accordingly. Picnic facilities are available as are posted maps of the park. We explored for hours in the rain-it was a truly remarkable experience!
