点评:Named after Sir George Yonge, and finding its roots in the early 1700s as a simple dirt trail, Yonge Street would evolve into the city of Toronto’s largest and most important artery for doing business. For a time (until 1999), Yonge Street was also acknowledged, by the Guinness Book of World Records, as the longest street in the world. Officially, Yonge Street clocks in at about 86 kilometres in length which is still pretty impressive.
While Yonge Street basically stretches from Lake Ontario all the way to Lake Simcoe, when most talk of Yonge Street they’re usually referring to the relatively small area between Sankofa Square and Bloor Street (Yorkville). This, it seems, is the major commercial and tourist district of Toronto. In many respects, Yonge reminds me of Vancouver’s Granville Street, albeit on a smaller scale. Like Granville, Yonge is viewed as a major shopping and entertainment district. Think about it. On Yonge, you have Sankofa Square, CF Eaton Centre, The Tenor, Hockey Hall of Fame, numerous heritage buildings and countless shops and eateries (hello, Jollibee!). In brief, Yonge Street has it all: History, culture, arts, education and entertainment. At some point in time it might be fun to walk Yonge Street – at least a main corridor – similar to my trek of Vancouver’s South Granville last year.
I wouldn’t say Yonge Street is an attraction in itself, though it might be if you’re a major history buff interested in the economic and social development of Toronto. I would say, though, that Yonge Street is so integral to the city – and such a key part of it – that you’re bound to encounter it along your travels and, when you do, try and immerse yourself in its history and all it has to offer.
