点评:Toronto like many urban centers has most of its great attractions in developed areas; however, it does have some equally great natural areas. One of the best is an escarpment of glacial moraine that was piled up by glaciers thousands of years ago to form the old shoreline of Great Lake Iroquois. When Lake Ontario formed latter at a lower level, its tides and waves eroded the escarpment to create one of Canada best natural amenities, Scarborough Bluffs.
The Bluffs are unique to the lake and the highest point along its entire shoreline. They extend nearly 9 miles from the Victoria Park Ave east to Highland Creek. They reach a highest point at nearly 300 feet above the lake (90 meters) around Cathedral Bluff, but they are most dramatic and best seen from Bluffer's Park along the shoreline where they are sheer.
They were named by Elizabeth Simcoe, wife of Toronto founder and first Governor of Upper Canada, John Simcoe, because they reminded her of the limestone bluffs along the shoreline of her hometown Scarborough, England. Like the English shoreline, these bluffs were created by erosion that interestingly contributes to the other most amazing, natural asset in Toronto, the Toronto Islands which create Toronto's natural harbor. It is interesting that these two pieces of truly unique geography for Lake Ontario have links to each other.
There are several parks along the bluff line in the former city of Scarborough, now a district of Toronto. We visited Scarborough Cresent Park above and Bluffer's Park below to see and experience this truly unique natural phenomenon along the lake. This was our last stop in Canada on our last morning before boarding our return home. The impending flight meant we were not able to dedicate as much time as I would have liked. However, everyone in our group was glad we made time to stop and see this. It is a beautiful natural spot in the city and the best chance we had to experience the lake as well. I highly recommend you take the time to visit. If you are travelling to see sites east of Toronto this is a great stop either coming or going that will be close to your travels.
