We rented a two-story cabin for eight people at Hotel Chipinque, located in the Chipinque Ecological Reserve. Our group included three individuals with mobility impairments (using canes) and two children. Our experience was deeply unsettling and unsafe.
At approximately 3:00 AM, we were awakened by a loud noise. One of our party went upstairs to investigate and encountered a bear inside the cabin—face to face. We immediately retreated to a single room and called reception. Staff arrived and drove the bear away using a horn, but the damage was already done: the wooden door frame was broken, wood was scattered on the floor, the fridge door was scratched open, food was strewn about, and some items were missing.
We expressed our fear that the bear could easily break in again, especially since the cabin’s security was clearly compromised. The receptionist stated she could not issue a refund but would report the incident to management. Given the danger of driving down the mountain at night and the risk of encountering the bear outside, we barricaded ourselves in two rooms with furniture stacked against the doors.
The next morning, we saw a bear lingering close to the cabin, reinforcing our sense of danger. We left hurriedly and reiterated our demand for a refund of the MXN 8,788 (approximately USD 490) paid for the night. Despite providing photographic evidence and following up three times, we have received no response or resolution from the hotel.
This incident was not only terrifying but also highlighted a severe lack of safety measures and accountability. The hotel’s failure to address the situation or compensate us for the unsafe conditions is unacceptable. We strongly advise against staying here, especially for families or those with mobility challenges.
We urge Hotel Chipinque to take immediate action to improve safety protocols and address guest concerns promptly. No one should have to experience this level of negligence.
