点评:Hohenbaden Castle, which resides just outside the town of Baden-Baden and Germany's Black Forest, was an entirely unexpected highlight of our 2 1/2 week journey across southern Germany.
Getting to the castle isn't exactly easy. The drive is narrow and snakey, and as you ascend further and further, you may even consider turning back — but don't.
After about 10 minutes you'll reach a parking lot that is virtually empty. Like I said in the title: "undiscovered gem". You need only walk a little higher on your own, and voilà! You're presented with the gates to a castle that was first built in the 12th century.
It's free to visit, and there are no employees working there. You can wander and loiter from open to close.
The grounds take you from one breathtaking sight to another. Not only are the ruins themselves worth your time, but the views from this altitude are an attraction all their own.
We arrived on a cold December morning, and a thick fog had settled on the area. But once you get to a certain height, you begin to see over the fog. Then as far as you can see are the tops of hills in a sea of fog. It was incredible.
I would make a special effort to come back here if ever in the area again. Nature, history, and a hell of a view are an unfailing combination for any attraction I've ever been to. This one was no different.
