点评:Being volunteer run this museum has limited opening days. We managed to visit after a special weekend. Being midweek there were few visitors and limited volunteers yet they managed to run two different buses which included the one I was most interested in, a London Transport bus of the type I rode to Primary and Secondary schools back in the 50's and 60's up until the time they were withdrawn from service in 1962.
The great thing about the museum was the exhibits were not static but operated. The overhead wire setup meant the bus had to stop for the conductor to change the settings to allow the bus to switch routes, thus replicating the operation in service limitations of the overhead power setup. I rode a 4 wheel bus for the first time as London trolleybuses were 6 wheel. Kids will love going upstairs to sit in the front seats.
The memory I have of childhood rides was the silence and smoothness of the ride, this is not entirely replicated as the road surface is not smooth tarmac but cracked WW2 era concrete of the RAF Bomber airfield that the site used to be. Please visit and help fund future plans to resurface the concrete!
A great day out that even the most casual visitor could spend several hours here. Refreshments were served, Victoria Cake and tea amongst other items. There are videos of trolleybuses in service, and a delightful toy collection with many hand made trolleybus models. There is also a shed with buses from around the UK and beyond including Wellington, NZ. There is also a shed where buses are serviced.
This would be a great place to visit on one of the special weekend events, WW2 vehicles etc.
