Wetland Wake-up - a great experience, well worth the early start!

点评：We arrived in darkness at 6:20 ish and gathered in the visitor centre. A brief muddy walk along the raised bank took us to a great viewing spot overlooking both Lady Fen and the river. We could hear ducks (widgeon I think), swans (mainly whoopers) and geese (grey lag, pink footed). Our 3 guides were very helpful and chatty, describing calls and behaviours to help us. A barn owl quartered the land below us and later another one (I think - looked a bit browner, but may have been the changing light). Flocks of lapwings murmurated and as the light came, groups of geese flew off and then the whooper swans started to fly off Lady Fen. You could hear them down the runway. Several groups flew over us. Back at the visitor centre, we watched the swan feed. Just one family of 4 whoopers, but a few hundred pochard, mostly males, gave a great display of diving skills beneath our noses. A small flock of black tailed godwits also took flight. Then breakfast - very welcome on a cold bright wintry morning. Top entertainment from the birds and their habitat, made even more memorable by helpful, cheerful staff and volunteers. And I didn’t even mention the cranes.
