点评:We spent a wonderful part of a sunny autumn afternoon at the beautiful Decugnano dei Barbi winery, whose history dates back to 1212, exploring the vineyards, learning about the production of sparkling wine and tasting their wines.
The first to welcome us to Decugnano were two friendly and inquisitive dogs, each competing to win more attention from the new arrivals.
Accompanied by our welcoming and helpful guide, Angelica, we walked through part of the vineyards and enjoyed beautiful views of the rows of vines bathed in golden autumn sunlight. We also discovered something new to us – why roses are traditionally planted at the ends of vineyard rows. Angelica introduced us to the production of sparkling wine using the Metodo Classico and shared many other fascinating details about the grape varieties cultivated there.
The tasting took place in the beautiful setting of Santa Maria di Decugnano, an ancient medieval church offering breathtaking views across the vineyards towards the city of Orvieto.
We tasted four excellent wines: Frammento, Mare Antico, A.D. 1212 – whose name refers to the year the estate was founded and its centuries-old tradition – and the remarkable Battito. Its label, adorned with a moth, bears the ancient Latin palindrome “In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni,” meaning, “We wander in the night and are consumed by fire.” One of the owners has a passion for palindromes.
We found this particular one so captivating that we took a bottle of this excellent red wine home with us, even though we usually prefer white wines.
The tasting was accompanied by a selection of local specialities, including cheeses and salami, all of which were absolutely delicious.
Our only slight disappointment was that we were unable to buy the winery’s iconic Pourriture Noble. The most recent vintage, from 2020, had already sold out, and the right conditions for producing a new vintage had not occurred since then.
Nevertheless, our visit was a truly delightful and memorable experience that we will remember for a very long time.
