***I did not pay to enter this place. I walked in briefly while passing, and what I saw was disturbing and unacceptable.***
Elephants were chained by the ankle right at the entrance, swaying repeatedly — a clear sign of psychological distress. This is not care. This is cruelty. The park offers elephant riding and shows, which only exist because these animals have been physically and mentally broken through abusive training methods.
What was most upsetting was the number of tourists supporting this. Coaches full of people. This suffering is being normalised and funded.
This is not a sanctuary. It is an exploitation venue, and calling it anything else is misleading. If you care about elephants, do not come here.
There are truly ethical, hands-off elephant sanctuaries in and around Chiang Mai that allow elephants to live freely and without performances or riding. Do your research and support places that protect elephants — not profit from their suffering.
