点评:Having read a couple books about Doris Duke and her life and her philanthropy and her interest in art, we decided to visit Rough Point, where she lived for many years until her death in 1993. That fact is what sets this Gilded Age mansion apart from the others. Designed by Peabody & Stearns c1890 for a member of the Vanderbilt family, this mansion was first a summer home and then, from 1922, the home of the Duke family. As such, it hasn't undergone the kind of renovation that other Gilded Age mansions in Newport have had. So it has a lived in feel to it. We arrived by car and parked in the lot on the estate. While paying our admission, we chatted with the staffperson who shared some information about the house and the Dukes. I happened to notice a beautiful terracotta piece on the wall and was happily surprised to find out that it is an original Della Robbia piece! We started in the reception hall where there are some exquisite paintings hanging...portraits by Gainsborough and other noted artists. We walked about the house, following the arrows, enjoying the decor and scenery, chatting with docents who were more than happy to answer questions and share info. In the dining room, while listening to a record from Doris' LP collection (Aretha, Motown, jazz, and more) playing on her turntable, I came across three more Della Robbia pieces! Upstairs is her bedroom...a mix of traditional and contemporary! She went through a mother-of-pearl stage so lots of that to enjoy...plus purple carpeting. Loved being able to peek into her wardrobe too. Upstairs too we enjoyed an exhibition of 250 years of American design curated by the Newport Restoration Foundation, which was founded by Doris and which oversees the Rough Point house and campus. We spent a couple hours exploring the house and walking the grounds, including the remnants of this season's formal gardens. Each of the docents we talked with were knowledgeable and happy to share info and insights.
