My Favorite Downtown Montreal Church
St. Patrick's Basilica的点评
点评：One of the things we noticed in Quebec and eastern Ontario is a sort of dueling Catholic parishes that appeal to either French or Irish parishioners. In Montreal, we finally had the opportunity to visit the Irish version St. Patrick's Basilica. Most of the Irish parishes are named St. Patrick's (both Ottawa and Montreal).
We visited late in the afternoon on our main day in Montreal as we visit a trinity of great churches within close proximity which included Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral and Christ Church Anglican Cathedral. Of these three, my favorite was St. Patrick's. It is a beautiful church that is sort of the Irish version of Notre Dame with many similarities but in green and lighter as opposed to blue and deeper. The rear of the two churches are very similar. Where they differ greatly is the side naves of Notre Dame are covered with gallery seating and St. Patick's side naves extend to the high ceiling with tall and narrow stained-glass. Additional, where Notre Dame as the great statuary in the sanctuary, St. Patrick's has a gothic apse with a tall statuary alter flanked by tall stained-glass windows.
It is a very tall and large church that has great beauty in its design. The highlight has to be the green apse sanctuary and main alter. Like its nearby parishes, the church is an easy 15–20-minute visit that is free and uncrowded. I highly recommend a visit.
