Why You Must Get Out on Passamaquoddy Bay

点评：Sometimes I base my review not on the particular company I used, but rather on the experience overall, because I suspect it would be fantastic no matter who got you there. Such is the case with Passamaquoddy Bay which is shared between Canada and the US. From the Canadian side St. Andrews is the preferred jumping off point.
So what's so special about Passamaquoddy Bay - a lot.
Being near the mouth of the Bay of Fundy, it experiences huge changes in the daily tides that in turn create a number of phenomena. One of these is the upwelling of plankton from the ocean depths that creates a feeding bonanza for everything bigger than the plankton right up to the whales that eat both the plankton and the smaller fish that feed on them. The result is that Passamaquoddy Bay is a world class whale watching site and that's why most people venture into its waters.
There are a number of companies that offer these whale watching tours and Island Quest is one. Each has there own niche, whether it be in a zodiac which requires wearing a survival suit, a much larger tall ship that is a bit slower or a smaller speedier boat like the one Island Quest uses. All have their merits, but I liked the speed and adaptability of Island Quest.
The hope is to see humpback whales doing their thing - ie. breaching or the world's second largest whale, the fin just lumbering on, but that is the exception, not the rule. What you will almost certainly see is the much smaller minkes as well as harbour porpoises. The latter can put on quite a display.
What you can experience if the tide is right is the Old Sow. Sounds a bit boring until you learn that it the second largest whirlpool in the world. Now it's not the Charybdis that threatened Odysseus, but if you catch it right it's pretty damn impressive.
Okay suppose you don't see any whales and the Old Sow is sleeping, then what? Just some of the most beautiful maritime scenery you'll find anywhere. The West Quoddy Lighthouse is worth the trip alone - simply magnificent from the water.
Island Quest has the ability to respond rapidly to whale sightings, whirlpools emerging and other phenomena you can only experience at sea.
Oh, and one last thing no matter how you venture on to Passamaquoddy Bay from St. Andrews - the view of the town is amazing.
