A few days after attending La Traviata, I found myself facing an unusual dilemma. Should I return to Musica a Palazzo for Rigoletto, knowing that the venue, the format and the movement through the three rooms would remain largely the same?
Even the team honestly suggested that the novelty of the setting might naturally be less pronounced on a second visit.
I lowered my expectations accordingly.
Within minutes, I realized how completely mistaken my assumption had been.
What changed was not my appreciation of the palazzo, but my understanding of what truly makes this experience extraordinary.
During my first visit, the architecture naturally captured much of my attention. The historic rooms, the elegant interiors and the movement from one act to another were wonderfully original. Returning for Rigoletto, however, the novelty of the venue faded into the background, allowing something far more important to emerge with complete clarity.
It is not the palace that continually renews the performance.
It is the artists.
The same rooms became entirely different worlds because different singers, different instrumentalists and a completely different opera transformed the emotional atmosphere from beginning to end. I found myself discovering spaces that I already knew, yet experiencing them as though I had never entered them before. That was one of the most exhilarating artistic discoveries of my stay in Venice.
If La Traviata possesses elegance and emotional tenderness, Rigoletto brings an altogether different dramatic energy. The psychological tension never relaxes. Several moments, particularly those in which all four singers performed together while accompanied by the three instrumentalists only a few metres from the audience, created an intensity unlike anything I have experienced in a conventional opera house. The intimacy magnified every glance, every silence and every musical phrase.
The evening was enriched once again by conversations during the intervals. I spoke with a university student studying Environmental Humanities, then with a German mother and daughter, both violinists, who had returned after falling in love with this production the previous year. Later I met another German couple who had also chosen to come back after an earlier visit.
Those encounters were unexpectedly meaningful. One returning visitor may simply reflect personal taste. Meeting several independent returning visitors revealed something more significant: this production rewards a second encounter because the experience genuinely becomes different.
My first visit convinced me that Musica a Palazzo had created one of the most original ways of presenting opera.
My second visit taught me something even more profound.
The palace provides the setting, but it is the collective artistry of the singers and instrumentalists that recreates that world anew every evening. The architecture remains the same; the human imagination transforms it into something fresh, living and unforgettable.
