The Family Experience vs a Corporate Experience
We spent four incredible days and three nights living the life of an elephant keeper with a warm and generous Karen family.
## The Incidentals
- Free hotel transfers to and from Chiang Mai.
- More food than anyone could possibly eat, three meals a day.
- Private, spacious, basic but very clean accommodation with ensuite.
- No fan due to limited power, but cool nights made sleeping comfortable.
- Additional bathroom and shower facilities available.
## The Environment
The camp is home to an extended Karen family and several elephant keepers who live on site. Everyone was welcoming and genuinely invested in making our stay enjoyable.
## The Elephants
The herd includes three adult females, two younger males and two calves under two years old.
## The Experience
### Day 1
After an introduction to both the human and elephant families and the history of elephants in Thailand and Burma, we fed the elephants, walked through the jungle, enjoyed lunch by a beautiful waterfall and finished with a river bath alongside the elephants. Dinner was at a local restaurant and, as became a theme, there was far too much delicious food.
### Day 2
After breakfast we collected elephant dung, helped with morning feeding and accompanied the elephants on a walk to aid digestion. Following a generous BBQ lunch, there was more walking, another river bath and evening feeding. We learned that elephants sleep only about four hours a night and require continual feeding. Dinner was at the camp.
### Day 3
The day began with welfare checks on our allocated elephant, assessing sleep, behaviour and overall condition. After morning feeding, we made nutritious feed balls from rice, banana, tamarind and rock salt. In the afternoon we collected the elephants from the jungle for their river bath before settling them in for the night. Dinner was in a nearby village, where we enjoyed traditional Karen food and live music on a Te na ku.
### Day 4
After breakfast and a final welfare check, we said goodbye to our keepers and began the 90-minute journey back to Chiang Mai with memories that will last a lifetime.
## Our Thoughts
This was a truly unforgettable experience, not only with the elephants but also with the Karen people, their culture and their food.
Pack light, as clothing is provided to protect your own clothes from elephant damage.
We cannot recommend this experience highly enough. We are both in our 70s, and if we're fit enough to do it, almost anyone can.
