点评：Mt. Baldy is a massive "living" dune that is constantly in motion. One of the coolest parts of the visit was learning about how vegetation affects sand dunes. Unfortunately, because the vegetation has been stripped over the years, the dune is on a slow-motion march southwards. The park service is locked in a continuous struggle to keep the parking lot open. Seeing the sheer volume of sand they have to continuously remove just to keep the parking lot in service is a wild reminder of how powerful nature is. Even though you can't hike to the summit without a ranger guide due to sand safety and restoration efforts, there is plenty to learn. The numerous information boards scattered around the area are highly interesting. They do an excellent job explaining the dune's history, the complex local ecology, and the safety restrictions in place. We didn't do the beach hike.
