点评：It's a strange site to see the majestic and historic Barker Mansion at 613 Washington Street in Michigan City, Indiana. More likely such a Gilded Age structure would be found on South Prairie Avenue in Chicago. But here it is, a 38-room house that was built in 1857 by John Barker, a successful businessman whose car company would become Indiana's largest factory and employer. His three-story house also features 10 bathrooms and seven fireplaces and contains over 90 percent of the original furnishings and art objects. A monument of industry, philanthropy and turn-of-the-century life in Michigan City, Barker Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It has been renovated on several occasions, the first time in 1890 to complete a larger dining room and again in 1905 to expand the house to an impressive 35,000 square feet with numerous rooms and amenities. Today, a new permanent exhibit, The Haskell & Barker Car Company and the Legacy of Freight, tells the story of the great significance the factory had to Michigan City, Indiana and the nation.
