点评：The market cross is the first thing you see as you enter Castle Combe. It's a very striking feature. Market crosses like this were common sights in English trading towns but this one is unusual because it has a large, pyramid-like roof to protect it.
In medieval times, these crosses marked the location of a church-sanctioned market. Stalls would be set up here and people bought, sold and traded goods around the cross. Perhaps it helped to keep the traders honest?
The cross is raised on a stepped stone pedestal. There are no side walls. Instead, the roof is supported by four solid stone piers which stand almost 2m tall. The central shaft rises up through the roof and from the street, you can see its finial sticking out the top of the roof.
Along with the bridge, the market cross is one of the main sights in Castle Combe.
