Around noon on May 6, the AC failed while we were staying at Twyfelfontein Lodge. I reported the issue immediately by phone to Savanna’s reservation manager, who passed me to technical support. Instead of arranging a replacement vehicle, Savanna left me to coordinate with local mechanics and spend hours of my vacation managing repairs between the mechanic and their technical team. That cost me valuable vacation time, and I was late for a scheduled lodge activity.
The following morning, after yet another failed repair attempt, we had to drive about 400 km on dusty gravel roads with no AC and the windows open. Savanna arranged a replacement vehicle only after repeated complaints and a direct demand from me, and only at the next lodge that was just 3 hours away from Savanna office.
Mechanical problems can happen with any rental company. What is not acceptable is the way Savanna handled this situation:
• no proactive offer of a replacement vehicle,
• an unreasonable expectation that the customer would manage the repairs,
• putting cost savings ahead of the customer’s time, comfort, and needs,
• a disregard for their contractual obligations and their own reputation,
• defensive communication instead of taking responsibility and resolving the problem promptly
Future travelers to Namibia should take this experience into account when deciding whether to rent from this company.
The only reason I gave two stars instead of one is that, when I returned the vehicle, they at least provided us with a free ride to the airport.
The attached photos show the Savanna vehicle at a local mechanic’s shop and the dust that covered our luggage after we drove through the Namibian countryside with the windows open because the AC had stopped working.
