Mémorial De La Catastrophe De 1902的点评
点评：The Mémorial de la Catastrophe de 1902 is a must see. An audioguide is included and all of the exhibit captions are in French and English. This modern museum opened in its present form in 2019 and featured three rooms. The first room showed Saint-Pierre before the eruption. There was a lot of entertainment in the town and lots of bottles were found.
The second room is the actual memorial. The names of over 7000 people are inscribed on the walls. In the centre is the bell from Église Saint-Étienne de Centre, Saint-Pierre, 1865. You can see some of the volcanic ash that buried Saint-Pierre.
The third room is devoted to the aftermath of the eruption. There were only two known survivors. Louis-Auguste Cyparis was in jail at the time and the thick walls of the prison saved him. You can see the cell grating and cell latch from his jail cell. The heat from the ash fused items together, such as the jugs and cooking pots.
The museum had an interesting audioguide, which guided me through the exhibits and explained more about them. After the museum visit, I wanted to see some of the ruins of the eruption. If you go out onto the museum's terrace, you can see the ruins of 18th century warehouses. Many ships in the harbour were destroyed by the eruption. Their remains are still there today.
