Cape Town to Cairo tour with Oasis Overland

点评：I had a very positive experience with Oasis Overland and would definitely recommend the trip to anyone looking for an adventurous and relatively unusual way of travelling through Africa.
I joined the trip in Cape Town while many had joined from commencement in Morocco in the previous September. I completed my part of the journey in Addis Ababa having recently visited Egypt, while the main group continued onwards to Cairo. After almost five months travelling on the truck, I feel I have a reasonably good perspective on what worked well and what could be improved.
One of the major positives was our group guide, Judy. She was extremely committed throughout the trip and spent considerable amounts of time researching options, dealing with the inevitable logistical issues and generally doing everything she could to make the journey run smoothly. Her efforts and dedication were very much appreciated by the group.
Our driver, Rowan, was also highly appreciated. He is South African, speaks Afrikaans, and is an experienced Africa guide and driver. His knowledge of Africa, combined with his considerable driving experience, was a real asset throughout what was a very long and demanding journey.
The food was generally very good, particularly considering the conditions in which the cook groups had to operate. My only minor gripe was that occasionally the lead chef of a particular cook group could occasionally be over elaborate (in my opinion) in their approach, with preparation and cooking sometimes stretching to as much as three hours which I consider longer than necessary for an overland trip, where a simpler meal prepared efficiently would often be preferable. That said, the quality of the food was generally very good.
The accommodation upgrades were usually appropriate and provided a welcome break from camping when they were available.
If I were doing the trip again, one thing I would definitely do differently would be to buy my own two-person tent in Cape Town. The tents provided by Oasis are extremely hardy and clearly designed to withstand the demands of a long overland journey, but they are also relatively heavy and take more time to erect and pack away. A good-quality lightweight two-person tent would, in my opinion, make life considerably easier over such a long trip.
One of the things I particularly appreciated was that we had 12 passengers on a truck with a capacity of 24. This gave us a good amount of space and made life on the truck considerably more comfortable. From my experience, and from conversations within the group, I would personally find around 18 passengers to be the upper limit for a truck of this size. Above that, I think the additional crowding would start to have a noticeable effect on the experience, particularly on a journey lasting several months.
This was one of the reasons I decided not to take the Fez to Cape Town trip. Having now spent almost five months on the truck, I felt that I had a good understanding of the sort of group size that works best for me. That is very much a personal preference, but I would certainly choose a smaller group again for a future Oasis trip if the opportunity arose.
My other real difficulty was the social dynamic within the group. I normally travel independently and spend a lot of time travelling alone, so this isn't generally an issue. However, when you're living and travelling together in a relatively confined environment for such a long period, the social side can occasionally become intense. Different personalities, habits and approaches to travelling inevitably come together. I see this more as an inherent aspect of long-distance overland travel than a criticism of Oasis itself.
Overall, though, the positives very comfortably outweighed the negatives. I saw an enormous amount of Africa, visited places that would have been difficult to reach independently, and experienced a style of travel that is very difficult to replicate in any other way.
I would definitely recommend Oasis Overland. After almost five months on the road, I came away with a very positive impression of the company and the people involved. My main advice to anyone considering a similar journey would simply be to think carefully about the group size and to recognise that spending several months travelling in close proximity to the same people can occasionally be challenging.
