点评:We hiked the TMB with the Pygmy Elephant "Comfort" plan. We are in our early 60's and are hikers/backpackers with quite a bit of experience but this was our first "hut-to-hut" type of hike.
What Pygmy Elephant could control was delivered exactly as described and promised... the accommodations (lodging and meals), the logistics (baggage transfer) and the information/education provided were flawless and more than satisfactory. We really felt they had this process and itinerary dialed in! However, the heat wave the TMB has been experiencing (+25°F above average temps) was something that set us back a bit but that certainly was not Pygmy's fault.
Lodging options in spots on the trail can be limited but after talking with other people we met along the way, we felt that Pygmy selected the top accommodation in each area we stayed.
Meals provided (breakfast and dinner) usually ranged from good to excellent, portions were generous and enough to recharge and sustain us on the trail.
We felt their baggage transfer partner (Peak+/Taxi Mont Blanc) was top notch. We had to use them for transport for several segments that we could not do because of the heat mentioned above. They were prompt, friendly and professional.
All that said, there are some things that I would consider to do different and/or be aware of next time (and these we feel are beyond Pygmy's scope)...
Do Different: Where we start. We would not start in Chamonix/Planpraz with that long descent (5,000+ ft). We would start and finish in Les Houches. While we did train for this, we didn't plan on the heat and underestimated the long descent of that first day - both took its toll on us and caused us to miss several subsequent segments.
Be Aware Of: Meal times. Since we were hiking during the heat wave, we wanted to start as early as possible when temperatures were at their lowest, ideally before breakfast started (usually around 07:00). Places would pack a breakfast bag if asked but it was not the same or as substantive as taking part in the planned breakfast, so that caused us to start a little later than we would have like to. Similarly, dinner was usually much later than we would have liked (usually around 19:00 and as late as 20:00). In short, we would have preferred to eat earlier, get to bed earlier and extend our rest/sleep.
Despite some setbacks and adjustments, we feel that Pygmy more than lived up to it's end of the deal. The "do different" and "be aware of" items are just what we came away with as being a little smarter for the next time.
Finally, it's worth recognizing Tanya, Eddie and the team at Pygmy. They were patient with us throughout and when we needed to make changes during the hike, the Operations team was available and responsive.
All in all, still a great trip, an unforgettable experience and we feel that Pygmy definitely delivered!
