Interesting museum focusing on the Pennsylvania oil industry
Venango Museum of Art, Science and Industry的点评
点评:The Venango Museum (named after the county) is located in the former US Post Office building in Oil City; there in on-street parking nearby. Admission is by paying a modest fee. The museum has three display areas – a permanent one focusing on the local oil industry though extending to cover some of the other aspects of the town (and featuring a Wurlitzer salvaged from one of the many theatres it boasted in its heyday), a second smaller room specifically on the Pennzoil company which had been headquartered there for many years, and a temporary exhibition at the back.
I enjoyed all three sections; the oil industry one posed the question Oil: Black Gold or Black Magic? and made some reference to the adverse impacts, though not specifically to climate change. It also included a mannequin of Ida M. Tarbell and display about her work that ultimately led to the dismemberment of Standard Oil – but, of course, Oil City was home to many independents threatened by the actions of the Standard.
There is a small area at the end selling souvenirs and books about the area and its oil industry.
