点评:Expedition Cobra (formerly known as 'Pala'Fou') in Tignes Le Lac can be seriously dangerous. (Fou being the French word for 'mad').
One of our group ended up being stretchered off the mountain into the back of an ambulance (physical injuries aside, that rescue will cost you about 700 euro's so make sure you have insurance!) then taken to the medical centre for X-rays (another 200 Euro on top) and was left unable to ski for the rest of our holiday (though painkillers & neck brace helped - c 100 Euro). No more skiing and holiday ruined for that person (good luck getting a refund for any remaining skiing lessons).
We were lucky that person was not more seriously injured. When our ambulance arrived at the medical centre, the Dr's were already treating someone else who had separately also injured themselves on the Cobra Experience around the same time. When the medical centre staff say to you that the ride should be closed because it is too dangerous, that speaks volumes.
At the start of our session on Expedition Cobra we were held at the top of the Palafour chairlift for about 45minutes. Staff (who were very friendly) explained that the delay was because the pissteurs (i.e. ski patrol medical rescue) were busy taking someone off the mountain so we would have to wait until they were finished. What we were not told was that the pisteurs were attending to an accident that had taken place on the very ride we were about do ourselves.
After our accident, staff at Expeditiou Cobra revealed that there had already been four accidents that day on Expedition Cobra, which is quite an achievement given that it had only been open for about two hours before our session.
We have been tobogganing in many different resorts around the Alps without incident and we love it when it is done properly. There are, however, some very basic problems with Expedition Cobra, which could (and should) be easily fixed to make this ride safer:
(1) The sledges are very badly designed: The sledges are made of hard plastic but are unstable, in that almost all of the rider's weight is at the rear of the sledge. The sledges are prone to tipping up, with the effect that the rider falls backwards landing on the back of their head / neck. Expedition Cobra needs to invest in better quality sledges. That would immediately reduce the number of accidents. Please see the photo on this Tripadvisor website, where you can see (if you zoom in) that all the rider's weight is at the very back of the sledge, and there is nothing to stop the sled tipping over backwards (which happens frequently - every person in our group fell over in these sledges - and we are all experienced at tobogganing).
(2) Bad braking system: The sledges have a braking & steering system, which is barely fit for purpose. Riders are instructed to keep their feet in the sledge at all times and to use levers (one on the left and right side of the sledge) to brake and steer the sledge. When you pull the lever the opposite end of the lever lowers into the snow to act as a brake on that side. The problem is that when other riders have gone before you (and the snow is hard packed) then there are already multiple gouges / grooves in the snow in which the brakes will not slow you down (if you apply the breaks where there are gouges / grooves the brakes will merely steer you along the groove in the same path as the previous rider without slowing you down because there is no snow in the groove to resist your movement. Obviously the places where riders need to brake also have the most gouges / grooves, so the places you need to brake the most are the places where you are least able to brake. There are also parts of the course where the slope is too steep for the brakes to bring you to a stop, so even applying maximum braking riders are unable to come to a complete stop. Old fashioned wooden sledges (which extend behind the rider and so are more stable) and where the rider brakes using their feet would have been much safer. Another member of our group was trying to brake but was unable to slow themselves down sufficiently and ended up (unintentionally) riding over the edge of the course (where there was no bank at the edge of the course) and onto a part of the mountain they were not meant to be on.
(3) Poor helmets: The helmets were ill-fitting and had next to no padding in them. They also provide zero protection to the neck (because they are too high up). Bizarrely Expedition Cobra does not allow riders to use their own skiing helmets. You have to use the helmet provided by Expedition Cobra. That is astonishing given that almost all skiing helmets have more protection than the thin plastic helmets provided by Expedition Cobra. The helmets provided are prone to slipping and moving around the head (even when attached and re-attached correctly). Again, there would be fewer injuries if riders were simply allowed to use their own helmets. (While in the photos some helmets have torches on them, the helmets provided to us had no torches on them.)
(4) Signage: If you look at reviews, this has been a problem for several years now. There are parts of the route where you are left wondering where on earth you are meant to go. I was lucky in that I know the area well so guessed correctly but other riders (native French speakers) were asking me which direction we should go (this problem particularly applies near the building 2/3 way down the course where the toboggan run joins the Palafour ski run). Other French riders (not from my group) were also saying how hard it was. The route was very unclear in places. This could be fixed so easily with some signage. It is such a basic issue, and such a long standing issue (see other reviews) that it is baffling Expedition Cobra has not fixed this.
Conclusion:
Poor equipment makes this more dangerous than it should be. I suspect that in different snow conditions (when the snow is fresher / softer) that braking would be easier and falling over backwards would not feel like whacking your head onto concrete. The ride has potential to be seriousy good fun, but we would not go near it again (until they use better sledges and helmets).
If you are going to do this ride, make sure you have the Carte Neige insurance.
Also, if the sign by the Expedition Cobra office says that conditions are '5/5 difficulty', then come back another day. Do not put yourself / friends / family at risk.
