点评:If you're looking for a fully catered and removed and maybe lame experience, this is not for you. If you're looking for an authentic, involved, warm and a definitely incredible experience, this is perfect. I had an amazing time, and I was sad to leave by the last day and wishing we were staying longer for the final part of the migration.
We went on the 6 day/5 night reindeer migration trip in mid April. There were two other travelers and two other folks there for a nature documentary on the trip with us. We were accompanied by Nil's brother, sister in law, son, nephew, and other friends at various points in the trip. The other reviews already cover why and how this trip is absolutely amazing, but ill try to add more color!
We are still talking about Nils days after the trip - the hilarious things he has said and the warmth he - along with his family - has shown us and the other guests. He is always ready to share information about his culture and reindeer herding, but is also very curious and interested in the guests as people! We did not feel like guests at all, but friends and we're excited for Nils to come visit us in the states since by the end of the trip, we felt like we did indeed become good friends with Nils (: We are already planning to go back next year for the January trip when they make reindeer blood sausages!
You aren't on this trip as a luxury little add on. You're here as part of the crew - setting up and packing up tent, feeding and herding the reindeer, sometimes cooking and organizing too where needed. There are no planned events - planning and scheduling is not part of the agenda here - and you live each day as needed depending on what the reindeer do. For food, we ate stewed reindeer, boiled reindeer, cured reindeer, refried dried reindeer, bacon, sausages, reindeer breakfast sausages, Sami flatbreads, Norwegian whole grain breads, jams, juices, fruits, tea, and lots of coffee. I never liked store bought reindeer jerky, so I was worried about that being the main food source, but it was much much less gamey than the store bought items and was delicious!
One of the days, the reindeer were herded to just around the tents so I got to wake up to reindeer surrounding our camp and it was absolutely magical. We did not get to cross country ski, but we did attempt to go ice fishing - did not catch any though due to the weather. There was a short option to go visit a friend's sauna but timing didn't quite line up, and on the last day we stopped by a holy rock to make some wishes!
There is far too much detail to perfectly capture all of the moments, but it is incredibly authentic, warm, and unforgettable despite having
Some tips and less glamorous aspects for future travelers just as useful information to know:
- pack small amounts of toiletries to keep on your body since it may freeze
- be prepared to melt snow for drinking water since the Sami folk don't drink a ton of water (theyre on the coffee and redbull train)
- you can bring snacks, but there is so much food Nils provides so I would not worry. Fruits and fresh veggies might be good to bring to snack on, but be aware that they might freeze. It is not fun to be vegan on this trip.
- a thermos might be good to have hot water accessible for tea or coffee, since boiling water takes a bit of time
- I brought a drone and a 360 cameras and had plenty of time to take photos and Nils was very accommodating for different shots different folks on the trip wanted.
- We had a lot of downtime when the reindeer weren't doing much, or where the guests would not be super useful. You can hang out outside or in the tent - not a whole lot of privacy - so a book and headphones would be great.
- Charging is usually available but not always accessible so a powerbank is excellent to have.
- Women - you may have to take a short hike every time you want to go pee so keep that in mind. I took one of the snowmobiles out a bit to pee every time. no running water, obviously.
- You share and re-use utensils and cups and there will be lots of reindeer hair all over your clothes and things.
