点评:After breakfast we took the short drive to Haghpat Monastery at the top of the hill we were staying on. This is one of the largest monasteries in the country and another 10th century creation, excelling as a library and scriptorium as well as monastery.
Galust gave me a quick run down of the places to see in the monastery and the history before the group tour so I could go off and explore. One of the churches actually had some original frescoes which, although faded, was lovely to see. The bottom layer had the faces of the saints scrubbed out, apparently in the 1920s.
There were more open topped domes, strange in a place that gets so much rain and snow! We continued to wander around the site, certainly the most picturesque as the mountain views are awesome in themselves without needing a 10th century monastery perched on them. There was the inevitable dog that I played with too before we boarded the coach for the crossing to Georgia.
