The site consists of two almost identical temples standing side-by-side: the Hoysaleshwara Temple (dedicated to the King) and the Shantaleshwara Temple (dedicated to Queen Shantala Devi). Guarding these shrines are two magnificent, massive monolithic Nandi statues that are a sight to behold. Historically, this place was known as Dwarasamudra, named after the vast, beautiful lake that greets you at the entrance.
Key Tips for Visitors:
Guides: I highly recommend hiring a government-authorized guide. The symbolism in the carvings is deep, and they will help you understand the historical significance and the stories behind the intricate stone work.
Shopping: As you enter, many vendors will approach you selling books and artifacts. Be watchful and discerning about what you choose to buy.
Museum: Do not miss the Archaeological Museum located within the premises; it houses a fantastic collection of sculptures and ruins.
Facilities: There is ample parking space available for those driving. For those using public transport, the temple is very close to the Halebidu bus stand, making it very accessible.
