点评：There is so much to love about this theatre! It is in my opinion, the best theatre in Hamilton. This Art Film House started as a Vaudeville House in 1914 and it has been beautifully restored by keeping the original plasterwork, and structure, while adding a neon/led sign that perfectly finishes off this classic historical gem. It has all the historical charm, with the benefit of modern amenities. It has 280 seats that are new with arms that lift up for those that need a wider fit (like me). They do not recline, but they are very comfortable. There is a modern projection and sound system, with the added benefit of having the ability to screen 35 mm prints, when desired. There is a small charming book store attached that is a nice touch.
Occasionally musicians book the venue, but more often than not, there are terrific films that are critically acclaimed with a mix of Hollywood modern gems, classic films, international/foreign language films and on occasional screenings with a director and/or actors that attend for a Q & A. What you can be guaranteed when attending, is a first class film and one that does not always screen at the big Cineplex Cinema. If you are looking for the newest Vin Diesel film with fast cars, explosions and no real story line, you won't find it here. When Academy Award time comes around you can reflect back on the past year's screenings and find that most have played at the Playhouse including the shorts. A true testament to the films that owner Jacob Tutt brings in.
For those with disabilities, they have a ramp coming in, a raised platform, and a roomy accessible washroom with an automatic door that opens and closes with the push of a button. You need not worry about climbing any stairs.
The theatre offers non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, and more than just your average cineplex offerings, while still giving you the option of popcorn for all those traditional movie watchers.
Parking is abundant (unlike the Westdale Cinema - Hamilton's other art cinema house, which is also wonderful, but in my opinion falls just short of the amazing Playhouse). You can find abundant free parking in front and beside the venue, and when it is a popular screening there is a parking lot directly across from the cinema with very reasonable rates at 50 cents per hour. Speaking of reasonable rates, film prices at $13.50 or $9.50 for members with a yearly membership of $14.00.
My wife and I love this cinema house and attend it as much as we can. Thanks Jacob for bringing a beautiful theatre back to its original glory, while adding all the modern amenities. Stop supporting the big box cinema multiplexes and support the little guy, that knows how to offer a film experience in a much bigger way than your corporate multiplex theatre.
