点评:This is a very special place, one of the most serene, beautiful places I have ever been. It is located on the Edo road in an ancient postal village, we had dashi and rice and salmon at a wonderful cafe in the village. It has a small but exquisite collection of pottery and kimono for sale. But the experience of the temple itself is what really made the visit extraordinary. Tatami mats on the floor and futons. The sleeping rooms are large and lovely in a quiet Zen way. Lots of blankets and pillows. It's a shared washroom down the hall with two separate toilets and a tub and shower. The whole place is very clean. We only stayed one night and wished we could've stayed longer. There are beautiful hiking trails along the Kiso valley, spectacular nature, and you can hike one way and then take a public bus back, transportation in general is very easy. Eishoji is a working temple that has been in the family for 16 generations. The monk and his wife are absolutely charming, lovely people. She prepared a fantastic dinner of steamed salmon with potatoes and rice and vegetables, with fresh fruit for dessert and a local delicacy of sesame pudding. Simple but excellent cooking. Vegetarian options are available. My room was directly across from the pond and I could lie on my futon and look out at flowering water irises and blooming rhododendrons. Magome is one of the most popular towns on the postal road trail and it can be quite crowded, but we hit it in a rainy day and it wasn't busy. Hillbilly Coffee at the bottom of the hill has great coffee. The temple is a great value, not fancy at all but if you want a taste of real rural Japan, this is it! And the monk drove us to the train station in the morning!
