点评：5 REASONS TO SEE AMADEUS AT THE 2026 SHAW FESTIVAL IN NIAGARA ON-THE-LAKE (EVEN IF YOU'VE ALREADY SEEN THE FILM)
1. The actors and their emotions: Salieri (Tom Rooney) and Mozart (Michael Therriault) are at the height of their powers, so their stage interactions are deeply felt, both in response to the music and to each other’s behaviour. that both actors had musical training in their formative years likely contributes to this great collaborative success.
2. The music: Mozart’s compositions, ranging from the comedic, to the lyrically sublime, to the profoundly tragic, seem to waft down on us from on high, potentially suggesting a divine origin. The playwright’s careful choice of selections of Mozart’s music reinforces the plot each step of the way. An aside: although we hear the beautiful finished music, we actually see very little of this crucial side of Mozart’s character - the incredibly disciplined composer at work, producing a huge corpus of every type of music - opera, orchestral, vocal, instrumental etc.
3. The play: this is one of Shaffer’s masterpieces, and it has a profound psychological insight into the corrosive and all-consuming effects of Salieri’s envy, as well as the contradictions of Mozart’s behaviour: by turns, potty-mouthed, infantile, impulsive and ultimately self-defeating - yet capable of music that moves us to tears. Like Salieri, we ask ourselves: how is this possible?
4. The set design, costumes, and the dramatic staging all contribute to the tension of the story line, and are truly memorable - much better, in my opinion, than in the film.
5. Most importantly, this version of the play engenders deep emotional reactions in the audience: initially, laughter, sometimes titillated, sometimes shocked. But then the mood darkens, and we are witnesses to a double tragedy in the second act. Mozart’s life is cut short by poverty and illness. Salieri’s life is initially a triumph over Mozart, but ultimately becomes a resounding defeat: his music is forgotten, while Mozart’s is remembered for the ages.
Note: the play contains mature subject matter and language, and is probably not suitable for children.
Musical note: eminent doctors in respectable medical publications disagree as to whether Mozart’s inexplicable duality of behaviour (infantile/impulsive vs mature/incredibly productive musician) originates from a neuropsychiatric condition like Tourette’s, ADHD or from some other neurodivergent condition. This would be the "Nature" view of the hypothesis.
Some of the more psychologically minded scholars believe that "Nurture" is more important. Mozart had a very abnormal childhood, with his father parading him around the courts of Europe from the age of 6 onwards; he never went to school or had the opportunity to interact with other “normal” children (other than family members).
Ultimately, the audience has to come to its own conclusions about the reasons for the duality of Mozart's character and as to the sources of his musical genius. That’s what makes this production so stimulating and thought-provoking.
