点评:A fascinating “living” museum which traces the history of the local framework knitting industry, located on the charming site of historic workshops in Ruddington, complete with offices and worker’s and manager’s cottages, and original machinery. It is staffed by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers, including Theresa who showed us round, and Gill who gave us a demonstration on an actual frame knitting machine - wow! In another workshop, David the manager showed us a collection of Victorian circular knitting machines, precursor of the mechanised frames, and we had a go.
We started our visit with very delicious toasted sandwiches from the Parker’s Yard café there, eaten in their sunny courtyard, and after looking round the museum we enjoyed browsing their delightful museum shop. Items for sale included things knitted by volunteer Mary on one of the Victorian circular knitting machines, and I became the happy owner of the 1,190th pair of her cute hand warmers!
Highly recommended for an interesting and enjoyable day out. Entry is only £9 (less for kids, and family rates available). Easy parking provided in the nearby free car park, a short walk away.
