An Incredible Museum Hiding in Plain Sight

点评：My wife and I could hardly believe that a place like this exists so close to where we live. I had heard of the Military Aviation Museum before and had even driven past it a couple of times, but I never imagined what was actually here.
We visited on a Sunday around 11:00am, expecting to spend a little time looking around. Instead, we found ourselves completely absorbed in the place. If you love history, historic artifacts, or simply enjoy discovering places where the people involved genuinely care about what they are preserving, this museum is absolutely worth a visit.
One of the things that makes it special is the people. Much of the museum is staffed by volunteers, and you quickly get the sense that they are not simply there to supervise exhibits. They are there because they love history and want to share it with you. That enthusiasm makes an enormous difference.
**Make sure you take any guided tour they offer.** Our guide, Tim Erskine, was fantastic. It was immediately clear that he has a genuine passion for military aviation and an impressive depth of knowledge. I tend to ask a lot of questions when I visit historical sites, and no matter what I threw at him, Tim had a thoughtful, well-formulated answer. He never seemed to be reciting a memorized tour; he understood the history well enough to explain it, provide context, and follow wherever our questions led.
That turned what could have simply been an impressive collection of aircraft and artifacts into something much more interesting. Hearing the stories behind what we were seeing made the history come alive.
We left wondering how we had lived so close to the Military Aviation Museum without realizing what an incredible place it is. It feels almost like a hidden treasure tucked away in Pungo. Whether you are an aviation enthusiast or simply someone who enjoys history, give yourself plenty of time, take a tour, ask questions, and talk to the volunteers.
And if you happen to get Tim Erskine as your guide, consider yourself lucky. We certainly did.
