点评:Visited Ichishima Tei, the Northern Culture Museum and Saito Villa/ Kyu Saitoke Bettei on the same day.
Ichishima Tei: run down and unkempt. Came here because the gardens were said to be beautiful in Autumn, but weeds and vegetation was overgrown everywhere, the paths had a lot of leaves that should be swept to the side of the path in a well maintained garden, the pond was breeding mosquitoes and some buildings were in a state of disrepair. The entrance area is impressive and the garden near the entrance is better kept, but the deeper you go into the property the more the lack of maintenance shows. There is a small museum, and exhibit explanations are in Japanese with no translations. For those who can read Kanji, it was interesting to see how statements of accounts were kept in the past. The grounds are huge, which is a testament to the wealth of the family.
Northern Culture Museum: Absolutely beautiful and impressive. The house and exhibits are very interesting. For those who speak only English, the exhibits have simple English captions and there is a brief QR code guide you can use (scan the QR code at the entrance). However I suspect a lot more detail is given in the Japanese captions. With my limited Kanji, I spotted what looked like entire stacks of title deeds in a cabinet in one of the exhibits, showing the immense prosperity and wealth of the Itou family. Also interesting were the family trees that showed how some men were married out of the family and changed their surname. The best part was the scenery and gardens. It is autumn and the colours are starting to show here. The hall provides a panoramic view of the gardens that is unbeatable and comparable to experiences in Kyoto.
Saito Villa aka Kyu Saitoke Bettei: smaller house but also a spectacular garden that is viewable from both the first and second floor. It is the first week of November, and autumn, but the garden was mostly green and still looked like summer.
If you only have time for 1 house and garden, go to the Northern Culture Museum
