点评:TONINA is now open again as INAH has bought the land from the private owners. However, there seems to be a shrtage of INAH workers as there were none here so we got into the sire for free but the great museum was sadly not open this day. Tthere were a lot of tourist police and national guard so was very safe. The site is spectacular and the pyarmid made up of several palaces and temples is the tallest mayan pyramid in mesoamerica. and taller than the pyramid of the sun in Teotihuacan. The very top is closed off i guess due to preservation. the stellas on the site are well conserved as is the ball court. The view of the Ocosingo valley is impressive. As it was May the heat was very opressive 36C so take plenty of sunscreen and a hat and water! This site rivals Palenque but as it is lesser known is much quieter. It was a huge Mayan city and was often at war with Palaenque Tikal and i think also Yaxchilan. It is about 3-4 hours from San Cristobal and 30 minutes from Ocosingo. Definitely worth visiting.
