- The local men who took part in the group performances. It is nice to think that ordinary local people, rather than professional actors, are given the opportunity to preserve and continue traditional ceremonial dances and songs — and also have a chance to earn some money from it.
The downsides:
- There are large speakers set up around the performance area. They play music before the show starts, and it is incredibly loud — far too loud. Perhaps the volume is deliberately set this high to attract additional spectators and people casually walking past on the street. But for those who have actually paid for tickets and are sitting in the audience, it is painfully loud. Our ears were ringing and we had to cover them until someone tapped us on the shoulder. It was a family sitting behind us. They gave us some cotton wool to put in our ears — which they had already used themselves as a family.
- The show itself is more of a narrated presentation than a theatrical performance. The actors come onto the stage and mostly stand there, periodically changing their poses.
Their entire presence on stage is accompanied by continuous, uninterrupted narration — in Balinese, of course. The organisers should perhaps remember that it is tourists who are paying for these shows. The majority of tourists (around 60–80%) speak English. If the entire show is essentially telling a story, it would be nice if we could at least understand what we are being told, even if there isn't much to enjoy visually.
- When you purchase the tickets, you are given vouchers that are supposedly accepted at the shopping mall. However, none of the three shops we tried accepted them — one selling sportswear, one selling souvenirs, and another one that was probably also a souvenir shop.
